Item Description for Sale:
1 Nymphaea sp. Puerto Maldonado (Cuba) plant sent BARE ROOT. You will receive a plant close to flowering size. Upon receipt, plant it in clay soil and place it in water at approximately 25°C.
Habitat and Description:
This water lily belongs to the Hydrocallis section of the Nymphaea genus, primarily found in South America. These species are nocturnal bloomers and are pollinated by beetles.
Nymphaea sp. Puerto Maldonado is a relatively recent introduction from the Amazonian region of Peru. In full sun, its foliage takes on a reddish hue. It is easy to grow and quite vigorous. Typically, the flowers of this species open around 10 PM and remain open for 2-3 hours.
Since flowering occurs in the middle of the night, it can be challenging to observe. However, you can trick the plant into thinking it’s nighttime: around midday, cover the plant in complete darkness, such as with an overturned pot. Check back in 3-4 hours, and the flower should be open.
Cultivation:
This plant is easy to grow. Water temperature should range from 22 to 30°C, with a pH of 6-8. It thrives in various substrates, including clay. Full sun exposure is ideal. Fertilize regularly for abundant flowering.
