Item Description for Sale:
1 bulb of Nymphaea lotus var. thermalis, 2-3 cm in diameter. You will receive a bulb similar to the ones shown in the photos. If you prefer a sprouted bulb (and if available), please indicate this in the notes/comments section of your order. I inspect all bulbs before shipping and guarantee the delivery of a healthy and viable bulb.
Bulb Storage:
The bulb is shipped in slightly damp sphagnum moss. You can keep it as is at room temperature (15-20°C). Even if it begins to sprout a little, it’s not a problem—it can remain this way for several weeks. Alternatively, you can place it in an aquarium immediately, which should stimulate its growth quickly if the water is warm enough.
Habitat and Description:
This water lily has a fascinating history as it is the only tropical species discovered in the wild in Europe at the end of the 18th century. It was long considered a relic that survived the Ice Ages due to its presence in the Peta thermal spring in Romania. However, genetic analyses suggest it was likely introduced by humans, possibly by the Turks in the 1600s, as they were present in the area and known for their appreciation of hot springs.
Regardless of its history, this water lily is truly unique and will appeal to passionate collectors. Unfortunately, the thermal spring was diverted for human activities for a few years, causing it to dry up and leading to the disappearance of the water lily.
I was able to recover this original variety from a Hungarian collector who personally collected it in the 1990s.
This is a tropical, nocturnal-blooming water lily: the flowers open in the evening and close by mid-morning, sometimes later on overcast days. It is not frost-hardy and thrives in warm water and sunny conditions.
Cultivation:
Plant in nutrient-rich clay soil with plenty of sun and warmth to ensure healthy growth. When cold weather arrives, you can either let the plant go dormant and collect the bulbs or move it indoors and maintain water temperatures of at least 20°C to keep it alive until the following spring.
